Semester 2 Start-Up

The first day of Semester 2 is Wednesday January 28, 2026. Families are reminded that student timetables may change up until classes start at 9:00 am. As teachers finalize Semester 1 grades, the Student Success Centre (SSC) will be continuing their hard work finalizing all students’ Semester 2 timetables.

When classes resume on Wednesday January 28, students with “See Counsellor” in their timetable are asked to visit the main office to schedule a meeting with their Student Advisor.

If your student does not have “See Counsellor” in their timetable but still needs support with their timetable for Semester 2, please have them check the SSC D2L shell for more information. This updated information will be available on D2L when classes resume on Wednesday January 28, 2026 at 9:00 am.

Semester 1 grades and report cards will not be printed but will be viewable on February 2, 2026. Families are encouraged to check MyCBE at that time.

New Student Advisors

With Ms. Maki and Ms. Yates away on maternity leave, we are excited to announce our new Student Advisors who are joining the Student Success Centre (SSC) from within the JCS community:

Students with last names H–N will now be supported by Mr. Mark Regnier (meregnier@cbe.ab.ca)

Students with last names O–Z will now be supported by Ms. Erin Melrose (eamelrose@cbe.ab.ca)

Credit Recovery

The last day of regularly scheduled classes for Semester 1 was Friday January 23, 2026. There will be no new teaching or assessment on January 26 - 27, 2026. These days are available for students with pre-arranged credit recovery or reassessment opportunities with their classroom teachers. Staff may not be immediately available for students who arrive without a premade credit recovery or reassessment plan arranged with their teachers. Any students arriving at JCS on January 26 - 27, 2026 are asked to check-in at the Main Office for attendance purposes and to get support locating their teachers.

The JCS Parent Society is raising funds to support even more learning initiatives and resources by selling cookies on the first day of Semester 2. The JCS Parent Society will be in the hub selling cookies for $1/cookie at lunch (12:03 – 12:35 pm) on Wednesday January 28, 2026. Funds raised will help the Parent Society provide monetary support for learning resources and opportunities throughout JCS.

Winter Language Challenge Exams

Students who wish to challenge a 30- or 35-level language course may do so by completing the Language Course Challenge Consent Form available on page 15 of the CBE Course Challenge Guide for Students and FamiliesThe Language Challenge Consent Form is due to the JCS main office by Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Languages that can be challenged in this process include: Arabic, Cantonese, Filipino, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Ukrainian.

The primary purpose of the CBE Language Course Challenge program is to assist students in meeting all requirements for high school graduation. Registration priority is therefore granted to Grade 12 students who require the program to meet graduation requirements in the current school year. Other students are also welcome to apply to the program. 30-level language course challenges are offered twice per year. There are fall (October-November) and winter (March-April) sessions. A student can challenge one language course only per session.

Students are encouraged to see their SSC student advisor, Mr. Langille, Ms. Alves, or Ms. Gilbertson if they have any questions.

April Diploma Exam Requests

April Diploma Exam requests are now open. These exams are for students who completed a diploma course (30-level) in Summer 2025 or earlier and need to re-write the exam, or did not write the exam at the time they completed the course. Parents, if your student needs to write in April, please have them email assistant principal Rob Brown (rabrown@cbe.ab.ca) with their full name, Alberta Student Number (ASN), and the diploma course they completed (e.g. Mathematics 30-1) and when they completed it. These requests must be submitted by January 31, 2026.

January Diploma Exams are still canceled for students who completed diploma courses in Semester 1.

YMCA and JCS Parking

The Brookfield Residential YMCA and JCS Administration kindly remind JCS parents, guardians, and students that the parking lot in front of the YMCA daycare off 45 Street SE is reserved for daycare drop off and pickup only. It is growing increasingly difficult for daycare parents to find parking while dropping off or picking up their little ones.

The north curb of Seton Drive SE westbound between 45 Street SE and the student parking lot is also a restricted zone between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday to Friday. There is no parking or stopping except for Calgary Transit or school busses during that time.

Calgary bylaw officers and Calgary Parking Authority have informed JCS they will be on site periodically in the coming months to address both areas as they become increasingly problematic. Tickets will be issued to unauthorized vehicles stopping in either area and parked vehicles may be ticketed and/or towed.

YMCA Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities

Course Change Requests for in-person classes at JCS:

Student Advisors have been busy working on the many requests for course changes. Semester two course change requests for all in-person courses at JCS have been processed as of this week.

If you did not see a course dropped from your schedule, it is likely because the course you wanted to drop is required for graduation.

If you did not see a course added to your schedule, it is likely that we did not have capacity in the course that was requested.

Please note that courses and schedules may change until the first day of Semester 2, updated schedules can be viewed on PowerSchool at any time.

Online Course Requests for CBE-Learn for second semester:

CBE-Learn has closed the registration portal for all online classes next semester. Student Services received many requests for online courses and were able to accommodate many requests but not all.  Emails were sent to all students and parents/guardians, indicating whether or not the student was enrolled in the course they requested.

If we were unable to fulfill your request, and you are still looking to enroll in an online course, you can browse the many online high school options here: https://www.alberta.ca/online-learning

Availability of online courses varies significantly from school-to-school and cannot be guaranteed.

Courses required for graduation will still be offered in-person at JCS.
