Welcome, Ravens!
On behalf of the entire JCS learning community, we wish to offer all our incoming and returning students and families a boisterous WELCOME! We know it is going to be another wonderful year, and we can’t wait to get it all started.
To stay up to date on important happenings taking place at JCS throughout the year, we encourage students and families to review our weekly Raven Post, which is posted on our website and sent out via SchoolMessenger to subscribers near the end of each week. The Raven Post is a great place to keep up to date on what is going on at JCS and stay on top of any important information that needs to be shared. In addition to this, you can follow our Instagram, @jcs_ravens, for student opportunities, celebrations, and much more.
First Day
The first day of school for the 2026-27 school year is Monday August 31, 2026 and will have the following staggered entry:
9:00 AM | Grade 10s arrive
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Welcome activities
12:00 – 12:30 PM | Hotdog lunch for all students (Grade 11 and 12 students welcome)
12:35 – 3:38 PM | Mini Monday timetable for all students
Regular classes and timetables begin on Tuesday September 1, 2026.
Attendance
Regular school attendance has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. When students miss too much school, it can cause them to fall behind academically. Regular school attendance is an important life skill on the path to graduation and future employment.
If students are going to be absent for any reason, please email joanecardinalschubert@cbe.ab.ca. Any student who will be absent for more than 5 days is asked to fill out an Extended Absence Form from the main office.

Are you interested in school sports? Football, Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country and Girls’ Soccer are all starting their seasons right away. Please talk to one of the coaches or PE teachers for more information on trying out for a team. A list of coaches can be found on the JCS Athletics Page.
Important School Dates
We follow the CBE traditional calendar. The calendar sets common start and end days, non-instructional days and holidays. For our school’s additional non-instructional days, late entries, early dismissal days and events, see the JCS school calendar page.
The JCS school day typically begins at 9:00 am Monday to Friday. The day typically ends at 3:38 pm Monday through Thursday, with an early dismissal time of 1:15 pm on Fridays.
School Council and Parent Society
The JCS School Council and Parent Society are both excellent ways parents can get involved to help improve their child’s education here at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. These tireless groups work had to raise funds for a diverse array of initiatives at the school and help advise the principal and board of trustees on school related matters.
The first School Council and Parent Society meetings of the 2026-27 school year are on September 17, 2026 starting at 6:00 pm. Any parent with a student at the school is welcome to attend and participate.
Music Parents
Attention Music Parents! Please check out the new Music Parents Association website www.jcsmpa.ca and subscribe to receive our emails with important information about fundraisers, Music Money, and opportunities to volunteer. We are actively recruiting new board members prior to the AGM/travel meeting on September 23 to fill a variety of roles. Whether you have a lot or a little time to spare, there is a place for you to share your expertise and talents! Please email the MPA at jcsmpa@gmail.com for more information.
Spare/Study Block
All students with scheduled spare time are expected to be working in the 3rd Floor Learning Commons (LC3), or Upper Hub, while on campus. Student ID’s with spare stickers are required to use these spaces during scheduled class time. Spare stickers will be available at the circulation desk in LC3 starting September 9.
School ID and Photos
For school security purposes, all students are required to have a current school ID with them at school every day. School ID catch up photos will be offered on September 8 for any students that missed the initial dates in August. Photo retakes will be in October.
School Supplies
Students are expected to bring their own basic school supplies, such as pens, pencils, and binders with paper. Teachers will inform students of any specific additional supplies required during the first few days of class.
Lockers
Students who would like a locker for the school year will be provided a form link to request one on Friday September 4 in their Period 1 class. Due to the limited number of lockers available, it is advisable that students find at least one peer to share with and should have that peer’s name ready to put on the form. If students with exceptional circumstances require a locker before this time, please have them come to the main office before school, at lunch, or after school, to request one early.
School Fees
Where can I find fees associated with courses?
Your child’s school fees can be viewed and paid through the myCBE PowerSchool Portal.
What if I Can't Afford to Pay School Fees?
If you are unable to pay school fees, please access the CBE Waivers page for more information.

Transportation
Calgary Transit has express buses to some schools from designated communities. For up to date Express Route information, please visit the Calgary Transit School Express Routes website.
Calgary Transit also has a “Plan a Trip” tool or families can also call 403-262-1000 for assistance with route planning and questions about Calgary Transit operations. Families do not need to register to use Calgary Transit, including school express routes.
Student Parking Passes for 2026-27
Parents must complete the Parking Pass Application form, after the completed form has been submitted, a charge of $50 will be added to the students PowerSchool fees.
A parking fee appearing in the MYCBE account is confirmation that they will receive a pass. Once the online payment is complete, they will be issued a parking pass through the Main Office. Parking fees include GST, and are as follows:
· Full Year (Sept to June) $50
· Semester One (Sept to Jan) $25
· Semester Two (Feb to June) $25
Grade 11 & 12 students have priority for purchasing a JCS parking pass.

Newsletter Reminder: Student Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures
The safety of your students is our top priority. We kindly ask all parents and guardians to follow the designated pick-up and drop-off procedures to help ensure a safe and smooth traffic flow around the school.
Please remember:
- Do not drop off or pick up students in any of the YMCA parking lots.
- Do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off or pick up children.
- Do not stop in the bus zone
- The Childcare / 30-Minute Parking Area is reserved strictly for daycare families and individuals making a brief visit to the YMCA or library.
- Please use designated school drop-off and pick-up locations and follow all posted signage and directions.
YMCA staff may be outside periodically to assist with traffic flow and ensure student safety. Your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated as we work together to create a safe environment for everyone.

Lost and Found
There is a Lost and Found in the upper hub outside the Main Office to help students relocate lost items. Any smaller or valuable items turned in can be found in the Main Office. Please have students check the Lost and Found regularly as the items are donated at Winter Break, Spring Break and the end of the school year.
Student Success Centre (SSC)
Who is my student advisor?
Our Student Success Centre advisors work with specific students based on last name or specific demographics. Shannon Maynes will be assisting students with last names beginning with A – G, Mark Regnier will assist students with last names beginning with H – N, and Erin Melrose will assist O – Z students. Ben Kennedy will continue to assist our Indigenous, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Knowledge & Employability (K&E) students.
Course Change Requests
Course changes are now closed. Students that require a modification to their schedule can come in from 8:00-9:00am and 3:45-4:45pm Monday to Thursday next week (Aug 31 – Sept 4) for walk-in appointments in the SSC. Students may also book an appointment with a student advisor by going to the main office during lunch or after school.
Craven Café
Cravens Cafe would like to welcome back all students, we missed you! To all new JCS students, we hope you enjoy your first few weeks here at the school. We do our best to provide great food at low prices for everyone, please feel free to ask questions or make suggestions; our doors are open.
Craven's Cafe will be closed for the first two weeks of the semester. There will be no food available for purchase until September 16, so please arrange to bring your own lunch to school before that time.
